According to Check Fire, our principle provider of Commander fire products, there is more to construction than typical large-scale builds. The construction industry can incorporate a variety of sectors, including repair and maintenance, commercial, industrial and infrastructure. However, it’s vital to remember the importance of fire safety regulations on site, whatever the scale of the project.

The Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order 2005 sets out the law on construction site general fire safety, including means of escape. The CDM Regulations 2015 also impose duties including the requirement to prevent risk from fire. The fire risk from site activities must be assessed and precautions taken to control:

  • Combustible material – the quantity of combustible materials on site should be kept to the minimum and all such materials safely stored and used.
  • Ignition sources – action is needed to eliminate, reduce and control ignition sources on site.
  • Construction of timber frame buildings will require significant additional measures to those outlined here. You should refer to the specific guidance listed in Resources, below.

Fire Safety Equipment for Construction Sites

As mentioned above, construction sites present an array of fire risks, which vary depending on the nature and location of the project.

Our Commander fire extinguishers offer a vast range of high-performing, industry-compliant fire extinguishers which are ideal for harsh environments. A well-trusted brand, Commander manufactures fire extinguishers in line with British Standards, and select units feature BS EN3 Kitemark Certification and MED Approval.

To ensure compliance with British Standards, every construction site must also protect its fire extinguishers from accidental damage, vandalism and adverse weather. At Hartson Fire we also stock a complete range of cabinets, boxes and jackets to safely and securely house your extinguishers.  For example the Commander Double Cabinet is able to safely and securely house two fire extinguishers along with a lockable cabinet available for added security.

Due to the ever-changing nature of construction settings, there's also a need for mobile storage solutions for ease of transportation of fire safety equipment around the site. This Wheeled Double Stand plus fire extinguishers  fire alarm is ideal for a construction site of any size or type.

Everyone on a construction site should know what to do in the event of a fire, including how to raise the alarm and where the emergency escape routes and fire assembly points are. Fire safety signs not only provide clear guidance in an emergency, but also ensure compliance with legislation. Our extensive range of fire safety signs are highly visible and able to withstand the harsh conditions of a construction site.  See our full range of HSE compliant safety signage here.
